Through the Eyes of the Myanmar Person

The first sound you hear as morning arrives over Yangon is the soft, waving note of a saung-gauk (harp) strikinga single string in a nearby monastery, mingled with the distant recitation of a monk and the scent of freshmohinga (fish soup with rice noodles) and tea drifting from a street stall. That harp-sound carries our story backto a time of pagodas and rivers, when we lived as the people of Myanmar. Our ancestors built the ShwedagonPagoda that reflected the sun, the thousands of stupas in Bagan that filled the horizon, cities like Mandalay andAva where kings ruled with wisdom. The Bamar, Shan, Karen, Mon, Rakhine, and other peoples lived in harmonywith the Irrawaddy as mother and the mountains as father: farmers who grew rice in the delta, monks whomeditated in monasteries, communities where Buddhism calmed the soul and hospitality was sacred. Everyfamily knew the Jataka tales, the feasts of Thingyan where water was poured for purification, the bond strongerthan time. That was our golden time: a land of pagodas, rivers, and jungle, where people lived with the dhammaas guide and nature as temple, connected by faith and simplicity.

But then came the wave from outside, like a storm rising from the west. The British colonized us in the 19thcentury, called us Burma, plundered our wealth, tried to break us. Independence in 1948 brought Aung San –hope that was murdered – and then decades of military dictatorship. The uprisings of 1988, the SaffronRevolution in 2007, the Rohingya crisis in 2017: tens of thousands dead, villages burned, families fleeing. The2021 coup brought the army back, civilian casualties, prisons full of dreamers. Every family knew the loss: abrother who fell in the protests, a child who learned freedom was forbidden, a culture held in secret. The smell ofsmoke, the silence after shots, the emptiness in the streets of Yangon.

From that depth rises a pride that is deep and resilient. The saung-gauk that still plays ragas, the mohingashared with love, the pagodas that still stand. Our people laughing through pain, our youth rising for a betterland, our bond stronger than oppression. We have found our voice again: hope still burning along the Irrawaddy, unity growing in the shadows.

Yet the truth colors magenta like a sunset over Bagan. The scars remain: the dictatorship that continues, refugeeflows, poverty in the villages, memory of the revolutions. The outside world buys our tourism and our jade, butoften does not feel the depth of a people who never broke.

Still, we remember in silence: around the saung-gauk where music is made, during Independence Day on 4January when we raise our flag, in the pagodas where the spirits still speak – never forgetting who we were. Wetell our children of the old kingdoms and of Aung San, of the river and the mountains, so they know: we wereconnected and strong before we were challenged.

And yet… the saung-gauk continues, soft and waving, like a promise drifting over the river. That is our secret: wehave suffered under colonization, dictatorship, and violence, but first we were a land of pagodas and wisdom. For our children we build no walls, but a monastery square where everyone may meditate. How do we let thatstring-sound bring hope to everyone again? How does Myanmar remain a home of silence and resilience?
