Through the Eyes of the Ukrainian

The first sound you hear as morning arrives over Kyiv is the soft, deep pluck of a single string on a bandura, blended with the distant toll of a church bell and the aroma of fresh varenyky and coffee drifting from a nearby home. That string sound carries our story back to a time of steppes and rivers, when we lived as the people of Ukraine. Our ancestors built the golden domes of Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv, wrote the chronicles of ancientRus', grew wheat in the fertile black soil of the chernozem. The Cossacks lived in freedom on the ZaporizhzhiaSich, sang dumy songs about heroes like Taras Bulba, honoured nature in rituals along the Dnipro. Every family knew the stories of the princes of Kyiv, the feasts of Vyshyvanka where embroidered shirts were worn, the bond stronger than time. That was our golden time: a land of steppes, rivers, and forests, where people lived in harmony with the Dnipro as mother and the sun as father, connected through song, embroidery, and freedom.

But then came the wave from outside, rising like a storm from the east. The Mongols devastated Kyiv in 1240,Lithuanians and Poles ruled us for centuries, the Russians annexed us in the 17th and 18th centuries. Every family knew the loss: an ancestor who fought in the Cossack uprisings, a child taught that their language was forbidden, a culture held in secret. The Soviet era brought collectivisation, the Holodomor of 1932–1933 where millions died from deliberate famine, the Second World War with millions more lost. Independence in 1991brought hope with the Orange Revolution in 2004 and Euromaidan in 2013–2014, but also the annexation ofCrimea in 2014, the war in Donbas, and the full-scale invasion in 2022 that destroyed cities, displaced millions, and tore families apart.

From that depth rises a pride that is deep and unbreakable. The bandura still plays songs, varenyky prepared with love, the blue and yellow flag waving in wind and storm. Our people laugh through tears, our young fight for freedom, our bonds stronger than bombs. We have reclaimed our voice: the steadfastness that astonishes the world, the hope growing in shelters and on barricades.

Yet the truth colours magenta like a sunset over the Dnipro. The scars remain: the Holodomor etched in memory, the ongoing war, displaced families, ruined cities. The outside world buys our grain and our courage, but often fails to feel the depth of a people that never broke.

Still, we remember in silence: around the bandura where songs are sung, on Independence Day the 24th ofAugust when we raise our flag, in the villages where spirits still speak—never forgetting who we were. We tell our children of the Cossacks and of Euromaidan, of the river and the steppes, so they know: we were connected and strong before the challenges came.

And yet… the bandura continues, soft and deep, like a promise drifting over the steppes. That is our secret: we have suffered under colonisation, genocide, and invasion, but first we were a land of freedom and song. For our children we build no walls, but a square where everyone may sing. How do we let that string sound bring hope once more to all? How does Ukraine become once more a home of light and unity?
